Is Rolfing Painful?
In years past, Rolfing has had the reputation of being painful, though time has helped to dispel this myth. A sensitive and skillful Rolfer can change long-standing patterns with little discomfort. The most important thing to remember is that you are in control. It makes no sense for us to work in a way that is painful, as you will tighten up and withdraw from our hands. Painful Rolfing only creates more defensive holding patterns. It is counter to Rolfing’s basic philosophy of changing such patterns by creating length and space in the body.
Does Rolfing Relieve Stress?
Rolfing can leave you feeling less stressed and more at ease in your body as it creates a higher level of integration and order in the body. As the body approaches more balance, it becomes more comfortable. As a result, physical and emotional stress diminish.
How is Rolfing Different From Chiropractic?
In general, Chiropractic seeks to change the relationship of the bones through direct manipulation and usually limits the focus of manipulation to the spine. Rolfing recognizes that the soft tissue (muscles and connective tissue) directly influence the position and movement of the bones. Rolfing and Chiropractic work very well together. Once the soft tissue is in balance, Chiropractic adjustments will be easier and will last longer requiring fewer adjustments and quicker resolution of your discomfort.
How is Rolfing Different From Massage?
Massage is effective for loosening tight tissue, reducing stress, and promoting relaxation, but it does not balance the body in gravity. Dr. Rolf once said, "Anyone can take a body apart, very few know how to put it back together." The true genius of her method is the art and science of reshaping and reorganizing human structure according to clearly defined principles in a systematic and consistent manner.
Does Rolfing Last?
Yes. Changes from the basic series are still present many years after the series is complete. In fact, the body continues to change and integrate 6 months after receiving the 10th session. On the other hand, as bodies change and people have further injuries, accidents, or stressful times, additional work may be useful. A tune-up session is recommended 6 months to one year after receiving the ten-series to further address any long-standing patterns.
How Long Do Sessions Last?
With each session, 15 minutes is spent checking in and doing a structural analysis which includes walking, knee bends, and other various movements to assess your structure. 75 minutes is spent on the table. Sessions always end with neck work and a pelvic lift which serves as closure and integration of the work received.
What Should I Wear?
Women can either wear a 2-piece bathing suit, bra and underwear, or a sports bra and shorts. Men can wear their regular underwear or running shorts. Sessions always begin and end with a brief structural analysis. Before and after pictures are taken and are optional, though they serve as a visual tracking of the changes and progress of the series.
